Recently, NPGA has received inquiries from industry members who have been contacted by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) regarding data for the 2024 residential energy consumption survey (RECS). EIA began collecting data for the 2024 survey in July and the collection process is ongoing. RECS provides a nationwide representative sample of housing characteristics, including household energy consumption, utilization, and costs.
The data collected through RECS is vital for NPGA and the industry’s 36 state and regional propane associations. RECS is viewed as reliable, third-party data by government officials. This information allows us to better tell the propane story, explain marketplace characteristics on a state-by-state basis, and more effectively engage legislators and regulators to advance industry interests, such as combating carbon taxes and promoting energy choice.
For example, below are some state highlights from the 2020 RECS:
16% of households in Maine use propane as their primary space heating fuel (highest percentage in the country)
20% of households in Vermont use propane as their primary water heating fuel (highest percentage in the country)
6% of households in Michigan are all-electric (lowest percentage in the country)
77% of households in Florida are all-electric (highest percentage in the country)
60% of households in New Jersey experienced a power outage lasting more than 24 hours during the previous reporting year (highest percentage in the country)
