The Guardian co-published an article with HEATED, a newsletter self-described as written “for people who are pissed off about the climate crisis”, titled “How to greenwash: propane industry tries to rebrand fuel as renewable”. It’s no surprise that the article demonstrated a desire to further enflame its readers with misinformation, rather than to educate them.

In addition to the sensational title, the article falsely claims that the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is a lobbying group. PERC was established in 1996 by the Propane Education and Research Act, with a mandate from Congress to provide propane education, research, and training.

It is not a lobbying group.

PERC supports the pursuit of a wide path of clean energy solutions to achieve a zero-carbon future including propane and as production increases, renewable propane, which we clearly identify as two variations of propane with different feedstocks and therefore, different carbon intensities.

We are fully transparent in all communications on our website and in ads as the Guardian even confirmed with a quote from a spokesperson at the New York Times who said the newspaper “prohibits advertising that is intentionally misleading, deceptive, or contains false information.”

PERC invites all climate advocates interested in learning more or in discussing solutions to engage with us. It’s time to put aside inflammatory language and seek opportunities for productive conversations.
