warm thoughts

Recently NPGA President and CEO Steve Kaminski commented on LinkedIn on two recent interim victories:

The tide is turning…. NPGA has secured a pair of significant interim victories before the EPA and DOE.

Energy Star. NPGA successfully led a broad coalition in opposing the EPA’s 2023 proposal to remove the ENERGY STAR label for residential gas furnaces (but to leave it in place for electric). EPA has reversed their plan to sunset the ENERGY STAR label for gas furnaces, but announced a proposal to increase the efficiency level, which NPGA will tackle. The EPA reversal preserves propane furnace eligibility for ENERGY STAR designation.

Residential Tankless Water Heaters. In 2023, the US Department of Energy sought to eliminate non-condensing tankless water heaters through efficiency standards which could only be met by condensing models. NPGA led a coalition response to the proposed rule, including engaging with the DOE, the Department of Justice, the Department of Commerce, and the White House Office of Management and Budget. NPGA secured a regulatory victory on April 30th when the DOE released its final rule, which chose not to summarize or respond to any comments specific to gas-fired tankless water heaters in this notice, nor discuss any analytical methodologies or results for this product class (this non-responsiveness is a significant positive for the industry). NPGA will continue to engage DOE on its potential plans to amend conservation standards for gas-fired tankless water heaters.
