HUDSON, NY — US Rep. Marc Molinaro (NY-19) recently visited Mulhern Gas Company to discuss the pivotal role of propane in the region’s energy landscape, with a particular focus on renewable propane.
Congressman Molinaro looked on as a tanker from L.P. Transportation from Chester, New York pumped in R-10 renewable propane into a smaller tank at the Hudson facility. The visit underscored the significant impact of propane, both as a traditional fuel source and a cleaner alternative to more carbon-intensive options.
Mulhern Gas, a five-generation family business that has transitioned from coal and fuel oil to propane, has been a stalwart in the industry, supporting 3,200 customers in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Our customers rely on propane to heat, cook, clean and entertain, said Rick Cummings, Vice President of Mulhern Gas Company.
Molinaro praised the company for its commitment to cleaner energy solutions and the broader role of propane in reducing carbon emissions. “Propane is not just a fuel; it’s a significant part of our move towards cleaner energy. Companies like Mulhern Gas are leading the way, providing essential services while making a positive environmental impact,” Congressman Molinaro said.
The Congressman’s visit came amidst ongoing debates about energy policy and the transition to renewable resources. In New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), the state sets ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
Mulhern is one of several plaintiffs in a lawsuit against New York state for violating federal law by banning gas appliances and infrastructure in most new buildings beginning Dec. 31, 2025. “While we support the move towards cleaner energy, it’s crucial that policy decisions consider the practical realities and benefits of all available energy sources,” said Mulhern Gas Company Vice President Rick Cummings.
Propane, being a fossil fuel, is not in line with the CLCPA’s objectives to reduce carbon emissions and increase reliance on renewable energy. It is generally seen as a cleaner-burning fossil fuel compared to others like coal or oil, but it still emits greenhouse gasses when combusted.
Mulhern Gas Company has been actively involved in promoting propane as a cleaner alternative to higher carbon fossil fuels like fuel oil. “We’ve seen a growing demand for propane as it’s cleaner compared to traditional fuels. It’s a choice driven by both market demand and a commitment to reducing emissions,” said Rick Cummings.
Molinaro emphasized the importance of balanced energy policies that include a variety of solutions. “It’s essential that we approach energy policy with a holistic view, recognizing the value of all energy sources, including propane,” the Congressman said.
Mulhern Gas also shared its ongoing efforts to adapt and innovate, including using propane in new applications such as vehicle fleets and heating systems. “We’re seeing a shift towards more sustainable energy solutions, and we’re committed to being at the forefront of that change,” said Cummings.
The visit concluded with a call for continued dialogue and collaboration between policymakers and industry leaders to ensure that energy policies support both innovation and practical solutions. “Our goal is to work together to find the best paths forward in energy policy, ensuring that we’re making decisions that benefit both our economy and our environment,” Congressman Molinaro said.
